Integrated Water Resources Management Pilot Project "Middle Olifants" - South Africa

IWRM is a process which promotes the co-ordinated development and management of water, land and related resources, in order to maximise the resultant economic and social welfare in an equitable manner without compromising the sustainability of vital ecosystems.

Project region is "Middle Olifants", a river catchment northeast of Pretoria. This region is characterised by a large quantity of users with high water consumption: households, large scale irrigation farming, mining and quickly growing settlements.

The ecological importance of the Olifants River is linked to significant touristic values (Kruger National Park). Furthermore, transboundary issues have to be considered (especially Mozambique).
